Most of us think of Sunny Southern California when we consider the weather here in Newport Beach, but yesterday Mother Nature threw a storm at us that effected the first night of the Newport Beach Boat Parade.
Due to potential unstable weather conditions and strong winds, the first night of the 100th Annual Newport Beach Boat Parade was canceled last night.
If permits can be obtained from the City and permssion from Ruby's, which has to shut down for a few hours, is given, then the hope is that the fireworks will be rescheduled for Sunday evening.
If we obtain updated information, we will pass it along.
In the meantime, we're going to head out to the boat parade tonight to enjoy it as part of our family's Christmas tradition.

Christine: Wow, weather that bad in New Port Beach that the parade was canceled. Hope the City allows for the events to be rescheduled. A boat parade? Never heard! Do you have any pictures, I bet it would be a blast.
Michelle - Very unusual to have bad weather like that here. Check back in a day or two. We were at the parade tonight, and I'll post pictures in a few days.
It's a lot of fun - hot chocolate, family friends, and boats with lots of lights and decorations.
Hi Christine; We have a Christmas boat parade here in Monterey also. They decorate them with lights. Do that do that for you parade also?
Eileen - The boats are largely decorated with lights, but they also use blow up decorations and other decor to decorate the boats. Give me a day or two, and I'll post some pictures.
So Christine, did the parade ever happen or was the weather too bad? I've watched these lights on the water before, and they are beautiful. ;-)
Teri - Fortunately, the parade did happen, and it's beautiful as always. It's a 5 night run, and the weather was only bad Wednesday.
Hopefully, I'll post some pictures tomorrow. Today was my one year old's birthday party, and I'm ready for sleep.
Hi Christine - did you end up going? I wanted to go - just was not in the cards this year . . . I did go to the one in Huntington Harbor however. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Sharon - We made it over on Thursday night. It's one of our traditions. We also went to the one on Naples Island in Long Beach, which I hadn't been to in 15 years or more.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
We had two boat parades down here, one for the little boats and one for the monster boats. The monster boats were all lit up, of course, since they have the money to put up as many lights as possible. Quite often, though, the little boats use more creativity and ingenuity.
Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2009.
Jim - The little boats I saw in Long Beach at Naples Island were like that too - there was even a group of kids on surf boards decked out in lights.
Here in Newport we see both little boats, sometimes kayaks, and big monster yachts.
May you have a wonderful New Year as well.
