Costa Mesa's Neighborhood Blog: The Newport Wedge - Body Surfing Hot Spot

A blog about Newport and Costa Mesa with an emphasis on Costa Mesa Real Estate and Newport Beach Real Estate, written by a lifetime local resident of coastal Orange County whose knowledge of the area, combined with a strong background in mortgages, real estate and being an attorney, gives her clients many advantages.

The Newport Wedge - Body Surfing Hot Spot

The Newport Wedge is located at the mouth of Newport Harbor.  It is a man made jetty built by the Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1900's.

As a result of the way it was a built, it has unique properties which cause huge waves a few times a year.

Waves can reach all the way up to 10 or 20 feet, bringing out some of the world's best body surfers.

On other days of the year, the Wedge is a great place for any one, but on those particular days, any amateurs would be well advised to stay away and leave it to the experts.

Whether you want to try body surfing or skim boarding, fishing from the rocks or just watch the boats come in and out of the harbor, the Newport Wedge is one more beautiful place in the magical city that we call home, Newport Beach.

To see what the Newport Wedge is all about, see the video below.

Looks like a cool spot Christine! I am a big fan of the ocean so I would love this place.

Wow, Christine you had to go and post that didnt you!? What a walk down memory lane for me, I learned to surf on the beaches of Huntington and Newport in the mid 80's while skipping class at UCLA. Surf up dude, lets go! I went on to spend the better part of a year touring all the major & lesser known surf beaches of the Pacific. My tour took me to pretty much all the Survivor islands, all throughout east Australia, Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji but it all started right at Newport Beach where I 'biffed' my first 5 footer and planted my head in the sand like an ostrich with a wall of water on top. Never did anything bigger then a 10-12, those are scarey enough but I used to marvel at the guys at Pipeline, I SAW with my own eyes guys on 40 fters. Talk about a deathwish, that would be like an apartment building falling on top of you! Couldnt stand on a board anymore, back is too wrecked now, cant really ski either, at least not like I'd want to :( Thanks for the walk down memory lane

I had no idea what "body surfing" was so I looked it up on the Internet. Definitely not for me.

Watching the ocean is something I could do all day...it is relaxing and mesmerizing. We are so lucky to live in a coastal area. You did a great job with the video!
