Newport Real Estate News - Balboa Island Homes

Balboa Island is a lovely place to call home located in the middle of the Newport Bay which is one of the largest pleasure yachting harbors in the world.

Balboa Island is actually made up of 3 artificial islands - Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and Collins Island. In 1916, Balboa Island became part of Newport Beach.

Balboa Island

Balboa Island is connected to the mainland by a two lane bridge off of Jamboree on the northeast of the island. On the opposite side of the Island, access is via the Balboa Ferry which operates three private ferries to and from the island 7 days a week providing a lovely trip on the Newport Bay for a nominal fee. The ferry carries cars, pedestrians and bicycles throughout the year. Ferry passengers are taken from Balboa Island to the Balboa Fun Zone an area with arcades, restaurants, shops, a ferris wheel, merry go round, boat rentals and other attractions.

Balboa Island Ferry

Between 1908 and 1909, waterfront lots were selling between $350 and $750, with rumors that were sold for as little as $25. A far cry from today, when even in a "down" market, the homes sell from just under $1.4 million to just under $10 million. To see a list of homes currently for sale on Balboa Island, please see Balboa Island Homes for Sale.

Unlike other areas of Newport Beach, Balboa Island appears to still be more of a seller's market than a buyer's market, probably because of the limited number of homes available.

Balboa Ferry

Balboa Ferry

The Balboa Ferry is a throwback to the good ole days of the Southern California coastal lifestyle. The ferry is a 5 minute ride

(much shorter than the 5 miles to drive around) across the Newport Bay that offers great views and one of the most unique

experiences available in Orange County. Built in 1919, the Balboa Ferry has operated continuously since then and operates

every day of the week. On its short trip from the peninsula to Balboa Island, the Balboa Ferry reaches land every 5 minutes,

docks approximately 22,500 times each year, and travels an astounding 3,000 plus miles annually! The Balboa Ferry has been

owned and operated by the same family for all of its nearly 100 years.

Balboa Ferry

Take the ferry over to Balboa Island and enjoy the charming cape-cod style homes while you stroll around the island or visit

Marine Avenue for great shopping and restaurants or a Balboa Bar. The walk around the island is a charming 2 mile stroll with

amazing views, including the Grand Canal and the historic Balboa Inn.   All of these attractions, and the low cost of the Balboa

Ferry combine for an excellent place to tour on bike or foot.

Balboa Ferry

The Balboa Ferry is located at Palm Avenue on the peninsula, right next to the Fun Zone. The hours of operation are

6:30am-2:00am on Friday and Saturday, and 6:30am-Midnight Sunday to Thursday. During the summer, it runs 6am-2am every

day. The Balboa Ferry tickets cost just $2.00/car & driver, $1.50/motorcycle and rider, $1.25/bicycle and adult rider, and

$0.75/bicycle and child. Pedestrians are just $1.00/adult, $0.50/child 5-11 years old, and children under 5 are free! While this is

slightly more than the nickel that was originally charged back in 1919, the Balboa Ferry is still one of the most memorable and

inexpensive attractions to be found in Newport Beach. Contact Balboa Island Ferry for more information at 949-673-1070.

Balboa Island Through the Eyes of a Two Year Old

Balboa Island Through the Eyes of a Two Year Old

When most people think about Balboa Island. they may consider the mutli million dollar bay front homes or the expensive yachts, the Christmas decorations or even the Balboa Ferry.  But, for my two-year old son, the homes are of no interest, and the yachts are "boats, Mommy."

Instead taking a tour of Balboa Island with my little one, allowed me to see another side of the island, one I probably haven't seen since I was his age and living there with my dad.

We started by taking the Balboa Ferry over to the Island.  What a delight to take him on the ferry, and to watch his eyes light up when we took him out of the car seat and let him experience the wind in his hair and the sun on his face.

That's when we knew our adventure had started.

"What's that, Daddy?"  "The Bay."  "Water, Daddy."

Balboa Ferry

"What's that, Daddy?"  "The Pavilion."

"What's that, Daddy?"  "The ferris wheel."  "Wanna ride!"

"What's that, Mommy?"  "The sand."  "Play, Mommy, shoes off."

"What's that, Mommy?"  "A seagull."  "Bird, Mommy."  "Yes, seagulls are a type of bird."

"What's that, Mommy?"  "A boat."  "Big boat, Mommy."  "Yes, a very big boat."

Balboa Island

"What's that, Mommy?"  "A bench."  "Why?"  "Because that's what it's called."  "Why?"  "Because that's the name that was picked for it."  "Why?"  And, now I'm thinking, I have no idea, I wonder if it came from Latin.

Balboa Island

Looking at Balboa Island was a very different experience than looking at if from adult eyes.  It was also a reminder that it's okay to stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the bay and just generally enjoy what's around you.

So, when was the last time you took the Balboa Ferry over to Balboa Island and just enjoyed a walk around the island and took the time to enjoy the beauty and smell the flowers?

Curious about what's available on the island, see Balboa Island homes for sale.

Balboa Island - Live on Newport Bay

Balboa Island is a lovely place to call home located in the middle of the Newport Bay which is one of the largest pleasure yachting harbors in the world.

Balboa Island is actually made up of 3 artificial islands - Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and Collins Island. In 1916, Balboa Island became part of Newport Beach.

Between 1908 and 1909, waterfront lots were selling between $350 and $750, with rumors that were sold for as little as $25. A far cry from today, when even in a "down" market, the homes sell from just under $1.4 million to just under $10 million.
