Regatta Cafe - Newport Beach Italian Restaurant

Regatta Cafe - Newport Beach Italian Restaurant

The Regatta Cafe in Newport Beach,CA offers one of the most unique experiences you can enjoy in Orange County. The combination of great Italian dishes and open air dining would be enough for most of us to pay a visit to the Regatta Cafe, but the additional ingredient of some very talented singing waiters and waitresses makes this cafe a delicious, fun, and interesting experience. regatta cafe The menu at Regatta cafe is fresh and tasty, with a combination of Southern Italian dishes with alfredo cream sauces and Northern Italian marinaras. The lunch menu is very affordable and the portions are generous (I did mention that this is authentic Italian cuisine, right??). Meals are served with a rustic style fresh bread roll that is crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy throughout, perfect with butter or to soak up the sauce on your entree plate! Regatta Cafe also features wines and desserts that compliment their menu. Clearly Regatta Cafe is a gastral delight, but during the dinner service the staff deliver a menu of aural delights that compliment the food just as the wine and desserts do. From opera to standards to to 40's, each is delivered with a professional panache that is quite impressive for an otherwise unassuming Italian cafe.

If you are coming or going from your multi million dollar Lido Isle estate or heading to Newport Beach for a fun and romantic date, be sure to include Regatta Cafe in your plans. There is no better single place to be entertained and catered to for the price! Regatta Cafe is located at 3421 Via Lido, Newport Beach. Their phone number is (949) 675-1878. Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach, CA is one of the most beautiful and charming sections of coastline in Southern California. The State Park encompasses both an Underwater Park along the coastline and the State Park Back Country area inland.

Crystal Cove State Park

The backcountry area is comprised of 2,400 acres that are part of the Irvine Ranch National Landmark. There are miles of trails throughout the canyons and woods inside the park that can be used for hiking, biking, and even horse back riding. Although no beach camping is allowed in the park, visitors can take the opportunity to camp overnight at the several campgrounds located throughout Crystal Cove State Park. The campgrounds are located about 3 miles from the beach. The hikes to these campgrounds can be challenging, but are equally rewarding. With views of the canyons and sightings of golden eagles and vultures along the trail, nature seekers will be enthralled with the experience.

The Underwater Park along the coastline is a wonderful experience as well. This part of Crystal Cove State Park features more than 3 miles of beach that stretches from Treasure Cove to Abalone Point. Visitors to this part of the park will have a multitude of tide pools, rocky outcroppings, and coves to explore. You will also see that the beach here is very popular for snorkeling, scuba diving, and various types of surfing too.

Crystal Cove Tidepools

If you need some respite from all that nature has to offer you here, the boardwalk near Pelican Point and the Crystal Cove historic district are a great place to get a bite to eat, relax, or do some shopping for souvenirs of your visit.

Crystal Cove State Park

To get to Crystal Cove State Park travel South on Pacific Coast Highway from the center of Newport Beach, CA. The park is located between Corona Del Mar and Laguna Beach. All day parking passes are currently available for $15.

All pictures courtesy of Christienne Grey Photography. Calendars of Crystal Cove as well as prints by Christienne Grey are available at the website above or at Crystal Cove.

Crab Cooker

Crab Cooker - Newport Beach

The Crab Cooker was opened in 1951 by Bob Roubian. Several years after returning from World War II, he was able to open a seafood restaurant. This had been his dream as he wanted to be around fish as he loved it.

My mom refers to this restaurant as Eat Lots O' Fish for a sign that was on top of the Crab Cooker for many years, along with another sign that reads "Don't Look Up Here". The restaurant is very eclectic in design and in decoration, including a shark hanging from the ceiling. It was originally a Bank of America building and is now painted fire engine red.

The fare is tasty, and the grilled fish is great. You will frequently find long lines of people waiting to get a seat. No reservations are accepted, and even President Nixon was told he would have to wait in line for a table.

My favorite for a quick lunch is to stop by Crab Cooker's fresh fish market and grab some of their amazing bread, a bit of smoked albacore and some of their famous clam chowder soup. We may grab it to take back to the office or stop along the bay for some fresh air with lunch. If you stop by, make sure you put money in the meters, as they are patrolled and the tickets are expensive. Today there are two Crab Cooker locations. The original is located at 2200 Newport Boulevard, Newport Beach, CA (949) 673-0100. The second location is 17260 E. 17th Street in Tusin, CA (714) 573-1077.

Bluewater Grill

Bluewater Grill

The Bluewater Grill has become a well known chain of upscale fish houses located throughout Southern California. While all the locations are in fun and lively spots, the original location in Newport Beach, CA can be found on Lido Drive, just off Lido Isle and the Newport Peninsula. Overlooking the docks and yachts, this restaurant offers a great meal for any occasion in a wonderful location. On nice days, of which there are many here, you will find the outside patio crowded with diners.

The menu at Bluewater Grill is a sensational blend of New England style cooking and high quality fish and shellfish, including locally caught swordfish when available. For anyone who might think that they don't take their ingredients seriously, be sure to check out their 'Fish Purchasing Policy' on their website! While diners have been enjoying the food and atmosphere at Bluewater Grill, critics throughout Southern California and even out of state have been awarding the restaurant their highest marks. Bluewater Grill has been voted to be the best seafood restaurant several times over. I know a lot of people with kids or sensitivities to seafood will stay away from seafood restaurants. That would be a big mistake to make as Bluewater Grill offers a kids' menu and several dishes of chicken, steak, or even burgers that are as lovingly crafted as the best seafood dishes. For those who are feeling a bit more adventurous (or perhaps amorous!), the Bluewater Grill has one of the best oyster bars available in Newport Beach. I've always enjoyed them on the half shell, but Bluewater offers much more than this. Oyster shots with vodka, clams on the half shell, and steamer pots of clams and mussels round out every seafood lovers wish list. Be sure to enjoy a meal at this great restaurant. The atmosphere is great for business lunches, get togethers with friends, or romantic evenings out with your loved one. Bluewater Grill is located at 630 Lido Park Drive, Newport Beach CA 92663. For reservations or inquiries, they can be reached at 949-675-1367.

Alta Coffee - Newport Beach

Alta Coffee - Newport Beach

It's unlikely that you would ever find it if someone didn't tell you where it was. However, once you find it you'll certainly find your way back. Alta Coffee Warehouse in Newport Beach has the feel of an actual coffee warehouse, which caused me to walk by the first few times without it occuring to me that I could actually get a coffee here. I really did think it was a coffee wholesaler and not a cafe.

A friend stopped by the office to help with a project and asked if I'd had my morning coffee yet. When he said we should walk over to Alta Coffee, I responded with something along the lines of “Oh, they actually sell coffee there also?”. I think he was amused with this answer and couldn't wait to introduce me to this great little hole in the wall coffee shop. We walked around the corner and up to the back of the shop. Even though I had seen the front of Alta Coffee Warehouse a few times, I would not have known it was there when walking up to the back entrance. It looks like many of the old cannery buildings in the area, without much to give it away as a gourmet coffee shop. Once you get closer though, you notice the patio sitting area which is a fantastic getaway from the industrial and cannery type of buildings that surround you in this section of Newport Beach.

Aside from the inauspicious exterior, the whole shop has a very eclectic and artsy feel to it. There are poetry sessions and live music regularly featured at Alta Coffee Warehouse too. But while all of these aesthetics are charming, the real issue here is the coffee. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in the coffee to be found here. There are several brews available (organic and frequently from small farms), and the flavor and roasting are far superior to chain coffee shops that are easily located on any main thoroughfare. There are foods available too, so if you need a bagel or sweet (their chocolate cake is incredible) to enjoy over your cup of joe, Alta Coffee Warehouse has you covered. If you need something a little more substantial they have great sandwiches on amazing bread and a savory Zuni stew.

While they are clear about not having anyone hang around during peak hours (no cell phone and no studying policy is in effect!) this is a great place to relax, enjoy your brew, and even do a bit of people watching. Alta Coffee does not have a parking lot so you're better off walking a few blocks if necessary. Signs won't wave you in from Newport Boulevard, but if you find your way here.....you will be back. Alta Coffee Warehouse is located at 506 31st Street, Newport Beach, CA 92663

Newport Beach Dory Fleet

Newport Beach Dory Fleet

There are a few good reasons to be out on the beach at 7am in Newport Beach, CA. You can of course surf if that's your pleasure, or watch the surfers if you're not up to actually going into the water. But, a much better reason for most anyone to be out this early is to enjoy the experience of watching the Newport Beach Dory Fleet work for a living. After braving the predawn waves, stringing their lines, and plucking their catch from the sea, they offer the rest of us a chance to buy their haul at a pittance compared to what you might pay at most grocers.

Operating from their small stalls at the base of the Newport Beach Pier, these fisherman are the last dorymen fleet operating on the West coast of the United States. They are the only commercial boats that are allowed to launch their boats from the beach. Due to increasing fuel costs and ever increasing regulations, their business model and indeed their lifestyle may be ending sooner rather than later.

The Dory fleet has worked the waters off the Newport Beach coast since 1891 in their 16 to 18 foot boats. They originally formed a small coalition of fishermen so that they could sell their catch without hauling it to market. Over the decades, they've become part of the fabric of Newport Beach and an attraction for tourists and locals alike to enjoy.

If you would like to see the Dorymen Newport Beach fleet and purchase your next seafood dinner, be sure to rise early and head to the Newport Beach Pier, it will be well worth your effort.

Newport Beach Whale Watching Tours

Newport Beach Whale Watching Tours

Do you enjoy being out on the water?  Do you like to observe marine mammals?  If you answered yes to both of these questions, then Newport Beach whale watching may be the perfect activity for you.

From December to April is a great time to go whale watching as it is the primary migration period for the grey whale.  This migration brings hundreds of these whales to just outside the Newport Harbor. 497 grey whales were spotted on Newport Landing boats in 2010.  Davey's locker reported 418 grey whales in 2010.

I remember taking several Newport Beach whale watching trips as a child with my mother and my sister.  I think the experiences are indelibly imprinted on my brain.  These trips frequently involved sightings of both whales and often pods of playful dolphins.  Seeing these animals is a great experience and well worth the trip.

Both Newport Landing and Davey's Locker offer whale watching trips. Newport Landing offers four trips per day, and Davey's Locker offers three each day.  They are both located near the Balboa Fun Zone along the bay.  They each offer several trips every day.  Prices for Newport Landing and Davey's Locker are currently $30 for adults, and $25 for juniors (under 12) and seniors (60+ years).  Davey's Locker is located at 400 Main Street, Balboa, California -  (949) 673-1435.  Newport Landing is located at 309 Palm Street, Newport Beach, California -  (949) 675-0551.

Stroll the Balboa Boardwalk - Balboa Peninsula, CA

Stroll the Balboa Boardwalk - Balboa Peninsula, CA

The boardwalk runs from 36th Street all the way down to F Street.  There are several areas with food along the way at the Newport Pier, the Balboa Pier and 14th Street, just before (or after) Newport Elementary.  There are also plenty of little shops to enjoy during your stroll.

If you're ooking to enjoy a beautiful day in Newport Beach, why not take a stroll down the boardwalk on the Balboa Peninsula and enjoy a little exercise with your weather?

You might consider stopping at Pipeline at the Newport Pier for a Balboa Bar, or maybe you'd like to rent a boogie board and hit the surf for an hour.  Whatever strikes your fancy is likely available if it's a beach type activity - rent some roller blades or a bike and head on out if walking isn't your style.

Regardless of what you choose, I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip down the boardwalk along the

My children love to stop at what they call the Beach Park, better known as Newport Elementary, a school that is located along the sand.  What else would you expect in Newport Beach?

What is your favorite thing to do along the boardwalk?

Newport Pier - Things to Do in Newport Beach

Newport Pier

The Newport Pier is one of two prominent piers located in the city of Newport Beach CA, along with Balboa Pier to the South. The Newport Pier is known for being the center of activity along the beach area every weekend. There is ample parking (metered), restrooms and other facilities to use while enjoying a day playing in the surf and soaking up some sun on the warm sand.

This pier was built in 1888 and is 1,032 feet long. This wonderful Newport Beach attraction is even registered as California Historic Landmark #794. At the beach end of the pier is the Dory Fishing Fleet, which was founded in 1891 as a fishing cooperative. Originally, the Newport Pier was known as McFadden's Wharf. During its first decade or so of service, the Newport Pier was used as the shipping hub for the counties of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino.

 Fishing the Newport Pier

Today, you can enjoy extremely fresh fish if you come early to purchase the fresh fish the dory men bring in first thing in the morning.

Dory Fishing Fleet

While there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the neighborhood surrounding the pier, visitors will really enjoy having lunch at Newport Grill and Sushi, which is the restaurant located at the end of the pier. The restaurant has amazing panoramic views of the ocean and shoreline that are simply unparalleled. Another option is to simply get a plate to go and take a seat on the benches along the pier.  This is a great place to watch the waves break along the shore or kids playing in the surf.

The Newport Pier is also a great spot for picture taking when visiting Newport Beach. This pier is surrounded by great sandy beaches, perfect waves for surfing, and beautiful homes.  The Newport Pier is located at the end of McFadden Place and Ocean Front Street in Newport Beach, just 2 blocks South of Balboa Boulevard. The Newport Pier is open year round from 6am to 10pm.

What memories do you have of the Newport Pier?
