Mama D's opened in July 2005, just a couple of doors down from my office. There had been several restaurants in the same location over the years; I believe five in the previous five years. Having had a few great restaurants that I enjoyed close on me, it was with some trepidation that I decided to have lunch there one day with my husband. I did not want to find a new favorite restaurant only to have it too disappear.
Mama D's is located at 3012 Newport Boulevard in Newport Beach.
Obviously, Mama D's has escaped that fate, and it was obvious to me on my first visit that there was a lot of potential. We were greeted with a huge smile and felt so welcomed the moment we walked in the door.
Mama D's had been opened only a few days the first time we visited, and at the time, we thought that perhaps the treatment and incredibly solicitous service we received was a result of the fact that there were so few guests there. However, what we have learned since then is that Mama D's strives to convey a feeling of warm heartedness and caring. We are always greeted with a smile of welcome.
They even have a fireplace with a couple of couches, just like you would find at home.
I am always amazed at how enthusiastic and happy the staff seems to be. I found out when I sat down with General Manager, Luke Martin, the other day that when they interview for new staff, they are looking for good hearted, genuine people. The management treats their staff well, and as a result the staff enjoys working there, and it shows.
Mama D's believes in giving their customers what they want, Luke told me they recently had a little girl in who wanted chicken nuggets and French fries, not food normally on Mama D's menu. Instead of refusing, Luke ran across the street to a fast food restaurant and brought her exactly what she had ordered.
Knowing that I was going to sit down with Luke yesterday afternoon, I decided to bring a friend and get a second opinion.
We started out with Mama D's amazing bread and dipped it in the olive oil and garlic.
It so hard to pass up the second serving that was offered, but we managed it just barely. As we were enjoying their phenomenal bread, our waitress (Lindsay) brought us each a cheese ravioli with their tasty marinara sauce and freshly grated parmesan. They, too, were wonderful.
As I often do, I enjoyed Kelsi's Capri, made with fresh buffalo mozarella. I love it with shrimp, and my husband loves the fresh tomatoes though he prefers his with scallops.
My friend enjoyed our visit so much that she repeated several times that she plans to bring her entire family.
Mama D's in Newport is owned by Keith Davidson. There are two other family-owned Mama D's locations, one in Manhattan Beach and the other recently opened in Hermosa Beach.
According to their mission, "Mama D's is committed to giving EVERY GUEST a superior experience, exceeding their expectations by being friendly, focused, having positive attitudes, great teamwork and playing to win 100% 100% of the time." Having enjoyed their service and their food many times, I know that they truly believe in and accomplish their mission every time.
