At the end of the last school year, we had to decide whether or not to send my son to kindergarten this fall (he'll be five at the end of October) or to give him another year of preschool. Once we made the decision to wait another year for kindergarten, we reviewed our options for junior kindergarten.
He attended Lil' Lighthouse's 2 day and then its three day program and loved every minute of it. However, junior kindergarten is five days a week in the middle of the day, and my husband and I were uncertain if this would work for our schedule, so we wanted to look at our alternatives.
Going into this project, we did not realize how "spoiled" we had become as parents to a Lil' Lighthouse student.
Located in Eastside Costa Mesa at 301 Magnolia Street, this is a school where our son has learned to absolutely adore learning, where he has experienced love from all of the teachers and staff, where he has learned responsibility and the need to understand the results of his actions.
They taught him that when crossing the street with his class, he must never let go of the circle and always using his walking feet.
He has also had a great time being "Person of the Day" and taking field trips to many great locations.
He took a trip across the Balboa Ferry and chattered the entire time about being on the water.
He took a trip to Tanaka Farms and learned to pick strawberries and eat onions and other produce straight from the field - quite an experience for an Orange County kid in this day and age.
He also enjoyed a trip to The Aquarium of the Pacific,
a visit to the pumpkin patch
and Graduation Day for pre-school (considered quite different from Junior Kindergarten) at Adventure City.
Marge Menashe is the Director of this phenomenal program with 30 years of experience in education, 22 of it spent as a preschool director.

I discovered upon further investigation how lucky we have been to discover this gem of a school and how hard it will be to replace the love and enthusiasm the entire staff brings to their students.
Despite the fact that the junior program is in the middle of the work day, my husband and I decided that we could not give our son anything better than the "gift of time" by giving him an extra year of enrichment in Lil' Lighthouse's junior kindergarten program.
They have helped us create a love of learning in our son and a confidence in his ability to learn that is breathtaking. Lil' Lighthouse provides an environment where it it fun to learn and where it is safe to discover the limits of what you can accomplish.
