  Whimsical Gelato is a wonderful new dessert spot located at 3109 Newport Boulevard in the Landing a revitalized shopping center on the corner of Newport Boulevard and 32nd Street. It has both classic and more exotic flavors that change at the "whim" of its owner.    

 

 

When I was there for my first time, I fell in love with the salted caramel gelato. The salty and sweet mixed perfectly, and the smoothness of the gelato was amazing. The pumpkin was also amazing as are the other flavors that I have tasted.      

 

 

The decor is just perfect, making me smile as I walk in the door. It is simple, bright and colorful. Whimsical Gelato opened just two months ago, so be sure to stop by and discover this amazing new jewel along the Newport Beach coast.

Whimsical Gelato is open every day during the summer and is closed on Monday during the rest of the year.

Great Mex has Mexican food that first caught my attention because it smelled authentic from across the street.  We were down in Balboa, and curious, I wandered over to find a friend of mine who insisted it was some of the best Mexican food around. So, I tried it, and she's right.  It is just as advertised - Great!

Great Mex has Taco Tuesdays and Taco Fridays and the wait can be quite lengthy but worth it.

Great Mex RestaurantThe decor and atmosphere are casual, fun and colorful.  They have a nice salsa bar and the smells will make you salivate like Pavlov's dog as you wait for your order, but it will be worth it.

So be sure to stop by and try their Great food.

I have been looking and looking for new sunglasses. One pair broke; the other was so scratched that it gave me a headache to wear them.

Promelis Market has two locations in Newport Beach, CA that cater to the inner chef in all of us that believes we can cook like Giada or Ina. Promelis is well known for featuring fantastic farm fresh produce, quality meats, and a deli that is far superior to the usual grocery store deli fare.

promelis marketUpon closer inspection of the offerings at the Westcliff location, I also found that they have a dizzying assortment of specialty sauces, spices, and other gourmet ingredients that can turn your hamburger helper into a beautiful polpettone. There are literally hundreds of bottled sauces that you can peruse, and imagining how to incorporate them into your favorite dishes will leave you hungrier than a spring bear.

The produce, as mentioned, is farm fresh and attractively stacked into neat rows like a rainbow of fiber and vitamins. While the selection of produce is generally not exotic, the quality of fruits and vegetables are considerably better than most of us are used to seeing.

Though the Balboa location is convenient for some, I like the Westcliff location as it is right next to Keans Coffee, which is Orange County's contribution to higher quality coffee chains. Be sure to try out either location once you are ready to say goodbye to your current grocery warehouse. With the fine selection of meats, produce, and ingredients available to you at Promelis, you will truly feel like a food show superstar.

Back Bay View Park - Newport Beach Parks

Back Bay View Park

Back Bay View Park is one of the entries to the Back Bay Loop Trail. Located along Jamboree and Pacific Coast Highway at 1900 Back Bay Drive in Newport Beach, CA, it has a wonderful view overlooking the Newport Dunes. It is also one of Newport Beach's newer parks, having only been a park since around 2005. The name was chosen by the Newport Beach City Council from 129 names.

The park also features native landscaping and picnic tables and benches, making it all the easier to view the gorgeous views that are so much a part of this park.

There is even a short biking trail which will take you down to the Back Bay.

Newport Dunes is one of the best kept secrets in Newport Beach, CA. This harbor offers a one-mile stretch of sand and calm waters of the Back Bay lagoon, known as Mother’s Beach.

Within the harbor is the Newport Dunes Resort, which is a 100-acre waterfront resort that is home to a state-of-the-art RV park, a marina with more than 400 slips, and a private waveless beach and playground that has been here since 1958. The Dunes also is home to 24 cottages that are available to the public to rent. These self-contained units offer spacious bedrooms, and full kitchens and baths.

Located on the Back Bay, Newport Dunes offers easy access to the natural beauty of the estuary. The Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and Ecological Reserve are comprised of over 1,000 acres of open space. The park includes the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center and the Nature Preserve is made up of the tall bluffs surrounding the Back Bay. For the ornicologists in the family, there are three sensitive species that make their home in along the bluffs: the California Gnatcatcher, San Diego Cactus Wren, and Burrowing Owl. This coastal wetland, one of the largest in southern California , is renowned as one of the finest bird watching sites in North America. During winter migration, up to 35,000 birds may be using the Bay at one time. It is home to six rare or endangered species: Light Footed Clapper Rail, Brown Pelican, Belding's Savannah Sparrow, Black Rail, Peregrine Falcon and California Least Tern.

Located next to the Main Office of the Newport Dunes Resort in the Village Center, there is a great selection of grocery items, household goods, RV supplies, clothing and gifts and souvenirs. This store is open seven days a week, but the hours vary with the different seasons. Sailboats, kayaks, pedal boats, windsurfers and electric boats are available for rent at Resort Watersports near the pier. For the more adventerous, sailing and windsurfing lessons are also available and guided kayak tours are available Sundays year-round at 10 a.m, provide by the Newport Bay Naturalists & Friends.
Bicycles, skates, rollerblades, boogie boards, floatation rafts, beach chairs and umbrellas are available at the rental booth next to the Market Place.
Newport Dunes also features the Back Bay Bistro, which is the resort's onsite restaurant with superior views of the Back Bay. The restaurant offers casual dining with one of the best features in any local restaurant, a retractable roof for the al fresco dining area.
In addition to all of this, the Dunes also features a fantastic Fourth of July fireworks display.

Very few places allow you to take a ride on a carousel with a view of the water. Newport Beach is one of those places. When you ride the Balboa Fun Zone carousel, you have a gorgeious view of the Newport Bay and many of the boats that make up one of the world's largest pleasure harbors.

The Balboa Fun Zone has been part of Newport Beach since 1936, and the carousel is one of its icons. The Balboa Fun Zone was revamped in the mid-80's with the carousel holdings one of the top spots.

Placed up on a raised location, the Balboa Fun Zone carousel stands high above the Fun Zone allowing for the great view.

Both my children and I enjoy taking a ride on the Balboa Fun Zone carousel after enjoying a walk along the boardwalk, playing arcade games and enjoying a Balboa Bar.

Currently, it is $3 for a ride on the Balboa Fun Zone carousel, and children must be at least 50" tall to ride without an adult.

Balboa Fun Zone ride hours:

Sunday - Thursday - 11am to 8pm

Friday - 11am to 9pm

Saturday - 11am to 10pm

My Galley - Newport Beach Coffee Shop

Heading out early to catch some waves before the crowds? Maybe you’re heading to The Wedge on a cold day to see the waves crashing on the jetty? If you find yourself on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, CA in the morning and need a hot cup of coffee or a warm breakfast, My Galley is a great place to stop in and warm up.

My Galley is a nice neighborhood coffee shop that features fresh brewed coffee and plenty of specialty coffee drinks, teas, and even smoothies. Along with the drinks, My Galley also offers an array of bagels, muffins, breakfast burritos, oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches, and a special ground turkey chili that is great to enjoy after playing in the surf. My Galley is also open through lunch, so their menu includes sandwiches like the Club, BLT, burgers, and even PB&J.

If you don’t see exactly the combo of flavors that you like on the menu, they also have the ‘Your Way Sandwiches’ option so you can build your own. All of the ingredients are very good quality, including chicken and tuna salads that are made only with white meat.

Located at the intersection of Island and Balboa Blvd, My Galley is very convenient to stop at no matter if you are heading out to the beach, out to work, or just getting back home. My Galley is also located just across Island Avenue from the Balboa Library so be sure to take the kids over to check out some books after they enjoy their PB&J’s.
