Top 5 Ways to Help Make the Move Easier on Your Kids

Moving can be stressful for adults; just think about what it's like for children.

As a child, I moved a lot, usually changing schools at least once mid-year.  This gives me some perspective on how a child feels about moving and what can be done to help ease the transition.

Happy Moving Child

1.    Let your children know that the family will be moving as much in advance as possible.

This will give your child time to begin preparing for the move, to say goodbye to their friends and their school, if necessary, and begin thinking about their new home.

2.     Bring your children along for your home search, or at least bring them along and let them have their say after you have narrowed your choices to yoru top few.

This will allow them to feel they have some control and some say in the decision about their new home.

3.     Let the children pick out their rooms and perhaps paint colors and some new decorations for their rooms.

4.     Help your children plan their goodbyes.

They may want to visit some of their favorite places, or have friends over for a goodbye party.

5.     Keep family rituals.

If Sunday is always family day, make sure that it still is even while you're unpacking and moving in.  Keep as much familiarity as possible.  It will make all of the new things easier to handle.

With a little pre-planning, moving can be much easier on both your children and you.  Also, remember if you're excited and enthusiastic, they're more likely to be enthusiastice too.
