What is Memorial Day?
To some people, Memorial Day is an extra day off work, a day at the beach, a day to barbeque and hang out with family and friends.
For many years, it meant the same thing to me.
I knew that Memorial Day was a day to remember those who had served, who had protected our freedom, but I didn't grow up in a military family. Myt grandfather served in World War II, but he died when I was young, and I remember little of him.
My husband is a former Marine.
My stepfather served as a corpsman in the Korean War.
And, this Monday will mark the last day that my sister will see her husband for many months.
He is a reservist, and is being sent to the Sandbox for a year! This brings the meaning of Memorial Day to us loud and clear.
We need to remember that Memorial Day isn't all about the barbeque.
