My little sister turned 37 yesterday. 37 that amazes me! She's my little sister, and if she's 37, what does that make me?
When we were little, she was always my tag-along little sis. She was a part of almost every memory I have growing up. We are a little over 1 1/2 years apart, and I have very few memories before her.
For all the adventures we had growing up

from selling lemonade, to selling flower pots (another story for another day), to trips to Disneyland,

she was always present. Then, I was 17 and graduating high school and heading for Cal. I knew it was a big deal, a momentous occasion. What I don't think I realized was what I was leaving behind. Coleen and I had always lived together, spending few days apart. Now, we would live 400 miles apart and see each other only a few times a year.

A few years after I graduated high school, she moved to Tucson, Arizona and become a Wildcat at the University of Arizona. Now, I saw her even less. She was no longer home on the random weekends I came home. I only saw her on holidays.

Over a decade ago she moved to Texas. In some ways, it seems she only gets farther away. But, she really isn't. She's only a phone call or a text message away. We talk almost daily, sometimes more than once.
I suppose the distance could have ended our close relationship. Instead, over the years she has morphed from being my little sister to being one of my best friends.
She was there when I graduated college, and when I graduated from law school, she sat behind me and put the doctoral hood on for me. The following week, I watched her graduate from U of A. Living miles apart has not stopped us from being part of the other's life. When she became gravely ill the week after I started my first "real" job at a law firm, she called me and asked if I could come. I was on a plane the next morning. She threw a baby shower for me last October in preparation for Dylan's arrival.
She has grown into a stylish woman, a strong business woman who consistently has won awards for her successes.

These days, the advice is not a one-way street from big sister to little sister. Often, I call her looking to her experience to solve an issue or simply discuss possibilities.
It's amazing the woman she has grown to be. My little sister, that tag-along, is a woman in her own right.
And, now she will soon be adding another page to her book. In December, she will become a mom to twins, a little boy and a little girl. This is a road I have already traveled, Motherhood.

From a distance, I share her joy, using technology on the web cam to see her nursery and have an "in-person" tour. And, as always, I know I will be here to give her advice and watch in amazement as she takes one more step in her life's journey.
Knowing that her life is about to change dramatically, she decided to spend this last, child free birthday in the Big Apple - seeing a Broadway show, catching a Madonna concert and generally enjoying her special day. As always, she keep me up to the minute, texting me pictures from NYC and IM'g me late at night to discuss the details of her day and to reminisce about our lives
.
She faces a big challenge. One I know she will execute with flair.
Happy Birthday Chica! You've grown into a woman I am proud to call my sister and my friend.
What do you do to keep in touch with family who is no longer under the same roof? I'd love to hear your stories?
